Hi, to anyone who attends my life drawing evenings at Dieselverkstaden.
This Friday there will be no life drawing class due to Alla helgons dag (All Saints Day). The next “Meldrum Kroki will be on the 9th of November. Welcome!
Yes, with the exception of my Patreon supporters you are the first to see this new episode of Meldrum Art – Watercolour Journeys. I visit Iwakuni, my son’s hometown and sketch the Kintaikyo Bridge. The Cherry Blossoms were in full bloom, it was so beautiful. Back at home I try to capture that wonderful day as best I can in watercolour. The video will be available to all later today on YouTube.
I am currently editing my latest video, Meldrum Art – Watercolour Journeys (Hiroshima). It was therefore lovely to get a break at the weekend and meet my Urban Sketching friends on Djurgården to sketch a little.
This watercolour was inspired by my trip to Little India which is in the southern suburbs of Singapore. I walked down the busy Serangoon road and found this scene, I didn’t have time to take out my sketchbook just then, instead I took a bunch of reference photos.
Singapore is so fascinating. It’s cultural contrasts make the city so vibrant.
I very nearly threw this painting in the bin. If you are curious to know why look at my latest vlog on YouTube.
I realise it is just important to paint or sketch every day. The other day was difficult because of my poor health but just doing a quick sketch makes such a difference to one’s day. Just a simple watercolour can lift the the greyest of days. I feel a lot better now which is great 🙂
Sketched on Saunders Waterford fine grain, 300g 28 x 19 cm
I have been feeling unwell all week which is a shame as I love spending time here in Brittany. Yesterday I was so low in energy but I still tried to be positive and paint from the garden. I am truly spoilt when it comes to beautiful views. I only wish I hadn’t become ill. I suffer from a thing called Fodmap intolerance, I have to be very careful what I eat.
Anyway, this is a quick impression of the view of Paimpol in Brittany from Ploubazlanec where I am staying. 28 x 19 cm.
It is beautiful here in Brittany. I am staying at my mother in law’s house in Ploubazlanec which is not far from a Paimpol where I painted this plein air sketch. I come here every year and love it every time. The weather can be unstable but I am used to that growing up in Ireland. It is actually hard to create a successful watercolour when there is a blue sky, this is something I have learned over the years.
