  • A quick watercolour of the Vasa Museum

A quick watercolour of the Vasa Museum

The museum is on Djurgården here in Stockholm. I think it’s a lovely composition with the building and the boats in front of it.

The Vasa Museum houses an almost fully intact 17th-century naval vessel, the 64 gun warship called Vasa . It sank on her maiden voyage in 1628.

  • A studio painting of Djurgårdens canal

A studio painting of Djurgårdens canal

Every autumn the canal on Djurgården here in Stockholm becomes spectacularly beautiful. I noticed that the left hand side of the composition was cool and the people were in the shade. The trees on the other side of the canal were flaming reds and yellows. I tried to capture it, the impression I feel when I visit each year. I’ll probably paint the scene a few more times until I feel satisfied. I think this is a good start though.

  • Just doing it

    Just doing it

In the beginning of the week I took the ferry on a short trip across the water to Djurgården here in Stockholm. I wheeled my art gear behind me and looked for an inspirational spot to paint from. In the end it was the weather that decided. I needed protection from the strong easterly wind which was making 7 degrees feel really unpleasant.

The day’s subject became some oil storage tanks on the other side of the water. I was more interested in the sky but I needed a point of focus for the sake of the composition.

The finished watercolour may not be a masterpiece but for me just getting out and painting was the biggest achievement of the day.

    Have a nice weekend.
    Cheers 🙂

  • A new video at last.

Yes, it’s been a bit of a break. I think it was September or October last year when I last published a video. I have had a tough winter. I stopped producing videos as I couldn’t cope with the workload. I focused instead on painting and my life drawing classes. But now I feel good, my energy levels are back to what a 57 year old should be. I’m not a teenager for sure but I have regained my curiosity and enthusiasm to explore and achieve.
I hope you enjoy the video, I kept it short (6.30 minutes). It was filmed on Djurgården last August.
    Cheers,
    David

  • Urban Sketching is so much fun

Urban Sketching is so much fun

I am currently editing my latest video, Meldrum Art – Watercolour Journeys (Hiroshima). It was therefore lovely to get a break at the weekend and meet my Urban Sketching friends on Djurgården to sketch a little.

  • Meldrum Art – Vlog #2

It was a little easier to produce this time around. It’s fun even if it does rack up the hours. I reckon it will take up 40 – 50% of my time in the future. That means I will have about the same amount of time for painting watercolour. My life drawing will have to take a lower priority.

It will be interesting in the coming months to see if I succeed at vlogging or not. I am learning so much these days when it comes to film editing, I do enjoy being challenged.

  • Building a bridge

    Building a bridge

Djurgårdsbron is at the entrance to Djurgården which is a royal island close to the city center here in Stockholm. There are many museums, walks and even an amusement park. I definitely recommend you to visit if you are in Sweden’s capital city.
A friend of mine, Susanna Janfalk published a photo on her Instagram account and I felt very inspired to try and paint it when I saw it. I asked for permission and then set about drawing some sketches initially and then finally I did the final watercolour which you see here.

On seeing the painting my friend immediately wanted to buy the watercolour. Business is good when I sell paintings fresh off my desk!

There is no point in replicating a photograph as a watercolourist, this is why I sketch first. I want to find out – what is important and what can I take out, I am trying to make an interesting composition. A bridge between the reality of a photo and the execution of a watercolour.
