I had an amazing 14 day adventure up in the north of Sweden. We walked 125km though tough wilderness in Sarek National Park which lies above the Arctic Circle.
This painting which has nothing to do with Sarek has been at drawing stage for months and I decided on coming home to paint it and be done with it. I’m happy with many aspects of the painting, it is painted with confidence which pleases me considering I haven’t been painting watercolours so much recently. By the way, if you are going on a bad-ass trekking trip I can advise you to leave your painting gear at home, I personally was exhausted each day and I was more interested in climbing into my sleeping bag than creating a work of art. Next year I have promised myself a less rigorous holiday, one where I can spend a few hours each day doing some sketching.
I filmed a lot while trekking in Sarek and I will be posting several episodes of my adventures there at a later date. I will of course be painting watercolours that are inspired by my experiences too.
I love the design of these scandinavian pearls called Nordic Folkboats.
A friend of mine owned one and I sailed it a number of times, it is a beautiful boat to sail, the only negative was that it felt cramped when camping out in the archipelago. I painted these two sketches in my Moleskin journal (29 x 21 cm). Special thanks to Erik Lähteenmäki for the inspiring reference photos of a Folkboat regatta in Finland.
I plan to paint a few large format watercolours featuring these classic boats in the coming weeks.
This painting is pretty cool I think. In real life it has impact but when it is published on the web it looses its power due to the wide format. It become small and hard so see detail, a 4 by 3 format suits Facebook and Google + so much better.
Anyway, I like this watercolour, it’s not my normal style, I don’t wish to continue on this route either, I want to be more like Chein Chung-Wei when I grow up 😉

I finished these two sketches last week, only posting them now. I am painting larger versions for an upcoming exhibition in April. It’s good to do sketch first, one learns a lot by taking ones time and experimenting, unexpected happy accidents or silly mistakes that shouldn’t be repeated.
