  • A calm day in the outer archipelago

Recently, I have been painting from photographs that I have taken. As I write this, there is sleet falling to the ground. It’s not quite spring yet. Or, this is spring, it’s just a Nordic one.

The story behind the watercolour is that we took ourselves to Svartlöga on a ferry from Rödlöga, two islands in the outer archipelago. We wanted to visit Svartlöga for a long time but it’s difficult to visit with a sailing boat. We decided to take a ferry from Rödlöga and leave our boat behind.

This probably doesn’t make much sense to you, but it’s when I took the reference photo for the watercolour. I’m happy with the painting, but maybe not the explanation.

Svartlöga is surrounded by rocks, making it difficult to land there with a boat.

  • I enjoy a good train journey

I enjoy a good train journey

We travelled to Gothenburg to visit my son and his family. The trip from Stockholm takes three and half hours, which gave me lots of time to do a few watercolour studies.

I plan to paint a series of paintings of chosen islands in the archipelago. Right now, I’m inspired by the landscape of Svartlöga, an island in the outer archipelago.

  • Is anything better than nothing?

    Is anything better than nothing?

I am going through a period were my time for art is limited, I have to work as a webmaster for 6 weeks during July and August. I know that in order to be a good artist I have to practice everyday which is basically not easy.
So, is painting for the sake of painting a good idea? This sketch which took 2 hours over two days is a case in point. It’s not a masterpiece but I feel at least I have painted something; I have learned a little, a small step – …on the lonely road to mastering watercolour.

This sketch was painted in a Moleskin watercolour journal 29 x 21 cm, the paper is not cotton but I like the challenge of its inferior qualities.
