Smile is...

SMILE stands for Schools Museums Internet Learning Education. The SMILE training course and teaching material are directed towards teachers and children engaged within formal and informal education throughout Europe.

The method has become a flexible way of addressing issues about identity. The method has also developed into several forms, each putting the stress on various aspects of the subject. Hence we have variations of SMILE - Schools Museums Internet Learning Europe, Schools Museums Identity Learning Europe and Schools Museums Identity Learning Environment being but three.

About the courses

The SMILE courses are concerned with enabling learners /trainers to explore, discuss and present a number of aspects of identity based on their own observations. The course recognises the importance of the built environment in exploring and expressing issues of identity and the role of museums and other cultural institutions in interpreting the value systems that inform identity.

Smile Book

All SMILE course participants will receive the SMILE book which is our teaching pack; SMILE Identity. The teaching pack is packed with inspiring material: essays on different aspects of identity exploration and citizenship in museums and the built environment, pupil exercises and teacher notes. The material is the result of the Socrates Comenius project SMILE (71617-CP-1-1999-1-SECOMENIUS-C1) upon which the courses are based. It is aimed at teachers of children and young people

We are only as good as our last course.

We take good care of our participants. A good standard of hotel, food and transport within the course is covered by your Socrates grant. We encourage a friendly, sociable atmosphere, were all situations are seen as learning opportunities.

Previous courses

The SMILE course has been held since 2002. Eleven Smile courses have now been held. Over 300 participants, teachers and museum educators have taken part in the programs. We collect examples of the course participant’s practical course work and enter them into an inspirational archive every year.
