Tuesday’s life drawing

This was a tough session. The weather was awful and I got soaked in the cold November rain, I was not in the right frame of mind from the onset. I thought all my sketches were disasters but looking at them now, the next day I see that it wasn’t a wasted evening at all. My watercolour technique is slowly improving, I’m getting a better feel for the medium, all it takes is – practice, practice, practice. I don’t mind, it’s what I want to do. It’s a great hobby.

Sketching at Ikea

I went sketching at Ikea today together with super-talented Nina Johansson. We are part of a small group here in Stockholm that meet once a month to sketch. At this time of the year it is too cold to be outside so we choose an indoor location. Ikea was a fun place to be, lots of interesting perspectives, colours and details. I bought a few things for my kitchen after we had finished sketching. 🙂

Good Sketch day…

I am much happier with my sketches this time around. I felt confident while using pen and wash to capture the male-model’s different poses. I want to emulate Charles Reid but I seem to be mixing in a little Francis Bacon and Lucian Freud in there too! No harm in that, but I want to be more subtle in my execution. I still have problems mixing Cerulean Blue (red shade), Cadmium Yellow Pale and Cadmium Red together to create skin tones in the short time I have for each sketch. It’s fun trying to get better though.

Yes we all have them, bad sketch days. Mine was today, I struggled to produce anything that was decent.

I was in Northern Ireland last week to see my family, I did this sketch on the flight home to Stockholm.

I spent Sunday afternoon sketching at Dieselverkstaden with a newly formed Stockholm sketching group called ‘Skissa i Stockholm’. A fun day was had by all and I’m quite sure we will be meeting again very soon.
