Capturing the light

I think capturing the light is the hardest skill to achieve in painting. I have been studying composition and tonal values during the last year, it is through the careful balance of tones that one achieves light. It’s really hard to master but I’m having fun trying. This watercolour was painted plein air a few days ago.

Good composition, nice tonal values, and dark ligth contrast works, but, always saying but, in the darks colors are a little dirty, maybe because of the dark wash to give depth. As usual a good work.

My wife always complains I go too dark just at the end of a painting. I am looking for a good balance between light, middle and dark tones. I am certainly no master yet but I enjoy the challenge. Sometimes I get it right but mostly I get it wrong. I hope with lots of practice to improve the odds between good and bad.
